Do you remember the children’s television show Romper Room with the teacher who would look through her magnifying glass and “see” the children watching the show? She would name them each week, “I see Jimmy and Susie and Mary and Joe.” I waited, episode after episode for her to acknowledge my presence. I’d stand in front of the old black and white set and shout, “I’m here! Can you see me?”

If I haven’t told you personally, please know that I see you. When I stand before you, I see the congregation, as a whole and as individuals. Each week, we bring a variety of situations and life circumstances to our gathered whole. Let’s treat each other tenderly.

(The following examples are based on people I’ve encountered over the last 12 years.)

I see the caregivers who are sacrificing time to do things for others. You’re feeling loyalty tinged with a bit of sadness. Take some time to do something for yourself today. God is with you.

I see those who made it through another day of sobriety. It’s a struggle, I know, but you are winning. Take it moment by moment. I believe in you. God is with you.

I see people who are downsizing in preparation for a move. You’re feeling excited about the place you’re going and at the same time unsettled about the change. God is with you.

I see some celebrating new jobs and new endeavors. It’s thrilling and, at the same time, anxiety-producing. You’re starting all over somewhere new. God is with you.

I see those who are missing loved ones. It’s been some time and things are better, but you wonder when it will stop hurting. God is with you.

I see people who just recently got diagnoses. You’re asking ‘why?’ and wondering what’s next. Let your faith be bigger than your fear. God is with you.

I see you, the parent with too much on your plate. You’re juggling a lot for your children’s sake. God is with you.

Please know that I see you and I care. Far more important, God sees you and God cares.  May God’s grace, mercy and peace be with you!

Job 24:23 He provides them with security, and they are supported; And his eyes are on their ways.

Isaiah 41:10 Fear not, for I am with you. Be not afraid, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

2 Cor 4:8-9 We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair, persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down by not destroyed.

Phil. 4:13 I can do all things through Christ, who gives me strength.
