Happy Thanksgiving to all, and to all a good week!

Even in difficult, complicated times such as these, I have faith that there are always things to be thankful for. Our lives are full of blessings, if we but allow ourselves to see them. As for the things that aren’t blessings? That’s why we reach out to others, our fellow children of God, to make everyone’s burdens that much lighter, and everyone’s journeys that much more joyful.

Your Thanksgiving plans may look different this year—I know mine do—or maybe they’re just a little more difficult and complicated than usual. Or maybe—as was the case for one of the attendees of this morning’s Bible study—it’s a relief for you that this Thanksgiving is simpler than ever!

Whatever the case, whatever the plans, whatever your joys and sorrows this week, know that God really is with you. There is a Jewish tradition at Passover to set aside an empty chair or a cup of wine for the prophet Elijah, and while I don’t have the authority or knowledge to speak to that tradition and its meaning in Jewish culture, the sentiment has always struck a chord for me in my own ways. This Thanksgiving, whether you’re alone, with loved ones, or sharing the most 21stCentury meal there ever was over Zoom, know that any seat you have empty in your home will be occupied. Whether it’s occupied by loved ones you have lost but whose spirits are with you and watching over you always, or whether it’s occupied by God, who is always waiting for a seat at the table of your heart, your home will be filled. Filled with love and joy, togetherness and gratitude. And if you’re reading this… know that my heart is with you too.

You are not alone.

“Do not press me to leave you or to turn back from following you! Where you go, I will go; where you lodge, I will lodge; your people shall be my people, and your God my God.” Ruth 1:16
