The other night, I needed to drive over to the church to pick something up. It was late, and I was struck by how empty the roads were. Maybe it was the weather, maybe it was because it wasn’t the weekend, but there was surprisingly little traffic.
After I had made my stop at the church, I decided to just drive around for a bit. Windows down, wind in my hair, music on the radio. Just relishing the acceleration on the night’s empty streets. Oh, don’t worry, I did keep to the speed limits and I obeyed all the requisite rules of the road… just barely.
There’s freedom in the open road. Not going where you have to, not following a strict itinerary or stopping at all the right landmarks… just letting go and seeing where the road takes you. Letting the wind in your hair guide you.
I knew I could always ask Google Maps to tell me how to get home once I was done (which I did!). Until then, it was nice just to get lost for a while.
There’s something freeing about releasing control every once in a while. About putting our trust in the universe, or God, or another person to take us where we don’t even realize we need to go. To loosen our death-grip on the steering wheel of our life, chip in for gas, and see where the open road takes us.
I guarantee you’ll be surprised.
