Our scripture reading his Sunday will by Psalm 23: “The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want.” As I reflect on that psalm, I’m thinking about the importance of how we think about God. For the psalmist, God is a shepherd that leads its flock to still waters. The way we think about God has implications for how we approach life, how we view the world, and how we relate to other people. Is God a stern father or a moral scorekeeper? I once heard it said we sometimes treat God like a “cosmic bellhop,” expecting God to tend to our wishes and desires.
At a basic level, theology is about considering divine matters. In that sense, we are all theologians. We all form opinions about God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. As I mentioned in the May issue of our church newsletter, The Messenger, one of the Lenten devotional discussion groups had a lengthy discussion regarding God as Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
There was so much interest in the topic, I decided to offer an opportunity to go deeper into the topic. Therefore, I invite you to join me for a 3-part discussion on the Trinity. Join me for a study on Thursday nights in May: 5/12, 5/19, 5/26 @7pm. I want to plan to hold this discussion in my office with an option for joining via Zoom.
As a guide, I plan to use the book The Divine Dance: The Trinity and Your Transformation by Richard Rohr. It is out in paperback if you’d like to purchase a copy. I’m also trying to get a hold of a few copies to make available to folks. Please contact me or Betty in the church office if you are interested in joining.
Blessings
Eric
