What’s the first thing that comes to mind at the mention of college spring break? We might think of thousands of students descending on Fort Lauderdale for a week of alcohol-induced debauchery. Perhaps the image that comes to mind is that of crowds of students living it up on the sandy beaches of Cancun.
Have you heard of alternative spring break (ASB)?  ASB is a chance for college students to use their spring break to participate in weeklong service and learning opportunities. Here’s something you might not know. For over ten years, there has been a group from Central Michigan University coming and staying at First Parish Church for an ASB experience. I’m told they engage in trail maintenance on Mount Agamenticus. The group stays in Fellowship Hall and goes out to work during the day.  When their stay coincides with a community dinner in Fellowship Hall, they’ll share a meal with the locals.
I want to thank Betty, our Office Manager, for her role in arranging these visits and our church members who provide hospitality, acting as hosts. I’m guessing there are numerous ways First Parish makes an impact in the world of which many of us are unaware. Hosting this ASB group is just one example. For those of you that quietly and discreetly make a positive impact in the lives of others, I salute you. Even if no one else is aware, I believe God takes notice.

Blessings,
Eric
