The Oasis - June 4, 2025

When someone was being annoying, we used to tell them, “Go fly a kite.” As a kid, I
enjoyed flying a kite. It was a challenge to run and to get the kite to catch the wind in just the
right way, allowing it rise. Often, I was amazed at the power of the wind. Even the little bit of
wind my kite would catch could pull me forward. Of course, I would experiment with how much
string I could let out. I enjoyed the challenge of capturing the wind and harnessing it in order to
keep the kite aloft.
Recently, I watched someone flying a kite at the beach. It brought back memories of my
kite flying days on the beaches of Rhode Island. As I watched, I recalled that you never know
what the wind will do. At one moment it dies. At another moment if gusts. It’s no wonder that
when the disciples of Jesus received the Holy Spirit, it came suddenly, surprisingly. There came
“a sound like the rush of a violent wind.”
This Sunday is Pentecost. It’s the Sunday we celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit that
allowed the disciples to witness to the risen Christ in remarkable, world-changing ways. It’s a
great time to reflect on ways we might catch the wind of the Holy Spirit. How can we harness the
power of the Spirit in our own lives? The color representing the Holy Spirit is red. If you attend
worship this Sunday, I encourage you to wear something red. Together, let us seek to be inspired,
led, and lifted by the power of the Holy Spirit. If you want to prepare for Pentecost, you might
even get out and fly a kite.
Blessings,
Eric
